I want to tell you about one of the mistakes I made in business. It’s such a easy, and indeed comfortable, thing to do. You might be doing it too…
This is about positioning yourself in your marketplace.
Even though it’s true that no-one can out-compete you being YOU, and your unique gifts, it is also true that people will draw conclusions about your (good or bad) from your position amongst your contemporaries.
I see a lot of fear out there around positioning; entrepreneurs are trying to play it safe by staying in the middle ground.
By staying in the middle ground they believe it will broaden their appeal. However your clients and your audience won’t position you as a leader if you don’t show yourself to be that by taking a stand first of all.
Ask yourself these questions to help you get perspective on where you are now and where you want to be.
- Who are you?
- Who are your clients?
- How are you perceived in the minds of your clients and potential clients?
- How do you WANT to be perceived?
- What is your business exactly?
- How does it help people? What is the benefit?
- What is different about you?
- How do you stand out amongst your contemporaries?
Ask yourself these 9 questions and make sure you come up with clear answers.
Then use your answers to consider your positioning.
Where can you see gaps?
Make a list of ways you can close the gaps and set a strong position for yourself and your business.
