21 Things You Can Control When Life Feels Out Of Control

I haven’t watched the news since 2013. Literally. No news on the TV, no news on the radio, no news online. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve taken in my life.

The pros far outweigh the cons. In fact, there are no cons. I can’t name one.

We have an unusual situation happening across the world right now, and for the first time since 2013 I found myself drawn in and tuning into the headlines. Gah!

Watching the news is not good for anyone’s mental health.

‘Yes, but I need to be informed!’

You don’t need the news outlets for that.

You don’t need a constant stream of information day in and day out.

Become selective. Google what it is you want to know specifically rather than consuming a whole hour (or day!) of the news.

Become aware of your mental health because it’s your mental health that will get you through this period first and foremost. It’s your mental health that will dictate your actions and reactions.

There are other ways to get information that are kept up to date and that do not have the alarmist quality that the news delivers.

For example:

World Health Organisation https://www.who.int/emergen…/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019

UK Government https://www.gov.uk/…/coronavirus-covid-19-uk-government-res…

USA Government https://www.usa.gov/coronavirus

NHS https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/

There are things that you can control and things that you can’t.

At a time when you may not feel in control, there are many things you can control;

Your mindset
Your beliefs
Your outlook
Your habits
How kind you are to others
How kind you are to yourself
Showing compassion
Being patient
How you act upon your feelings
How you take care of your physical health
How much exercise you take
How you view the world and events around you
Your personal philosophy
How you adapt your plans
Staying true to your purpose in life
Your judgement of others
How much love you share
How often you count your blessings
How much news you watch
The commitments you make
How much you love yourself

There’s always something good to be found in every situation and this current climate is not the exception to that. Nothing is ‘bad’. Sometimes we can’t readily or easily see the good or positive aspect, but it doesn’t mean it’s not there.
